Distance Learning FAQ's

  • How will school resume on August 20th?
    • When school resumes on August 20th, students will begin their classes ONLINE, in full distance learning, regardless of which option you select for your student.
    • Schools will transition to Option 1 Hybrid Learning only upon exiting the governor's county watch list for 14 consecutive days and meeting all of the health and safety criteria set forth by state and county public health officials.
  • If we're starting the school year online, why are we selecting our learning options now?
    • By selecting your learning options now, this allows CCUSD to appropriately plan for staffing, safety and health, and instructional needs. In addition, once we receive your selection, site administration will then be able to finalize class list accordingly.
  • What Happens when LA County health officials deem our school safe to reopen?
    • Option 1: Students will follow the CCUSD hybrid learning plan, including strict health and safety guidelines, and return to school.
    • Option 2: Students will continue with distance learning with a CCUSD teacher.
    • Option 3: Students learn via iAcademy.
  • What happens if I change my mind when schools reopen?
    • Option 1 (Hybrid learning): If you choose the hybrid option and want to change to Option 2 (Full Distance/Online only), depending on the availability at your school, you will be placed on a waiting list. If space is available, your child's teacher(s) may be changed.
    • Option 2 (Full Distance/Online only): If you have selected online only and want to change to hybrid, depending on the availability at your school, you will be placed on a waiting list. If space is available, our child's teacher(s) may be changed.
    • Option 3 (iAcademy): Because the iAcademy program follows a different curriculum, elementary students are enrolled for the year. If your circumstances change you need to exit iAcademy, you will need to contact the Director of School and Family Support Services to explore your options, space permitting.
  • My child in the Dual Language Program. Are all the options available in Spanish/Japanese?
    • Our ability to provide Option 2 Full Distance Learning will be dependent upon the number of students who opt for this option within your child's grade level/program and our ability to fulfill staffing requirements.
    • Option 3 iAcademy provides instructional resources in English only. However, as stated on the flyer, elementary students are eligible to keep their enrollment status at their site for the 2021-2022 school year. To support your child's transition back into a dual setting, we highly recommend that families continue to provide academic and enrichment activities in the target language.
  • Why isn’t my child getting a full day of school just like they would if they were in school?
    • Distance Learning is NOT traditional school.  It is a method to continue learning during our current crisis.  There is no equal replacement for the time your child spends in class with their teacher.  Additionally, it is difficult to deliver the exact same lesson your child would experience in the classroom.  Many families do not have the same supplies, same schedule and same ability to ensure their child is following the “school day” in the absence of the teacher being able to redirect them.  While the video platforms allow students and the teacher to engage it is not the same as carpet time or discussions that occur in the classroom.  Our Distance Learning Plan is designed with flexibility in mind.  Some families have both parents working from home and the need to share devices is important.  Some families are experiencing “choppy” internet service.  All of our lessons are designed so they can be completed on a schedule that works for each family.  The “live” lessons will be recorded so that families can work on the learning at convenient times within their schedule.

  • What about the other subjects? (elementary)
    • Students will receive content specific instruction through integrated lessons and readings they completed during their English Language Arts Time.  Additionally, specialists in art, music, pe and makerspace will be providing lessons for students to engage in to support their learning and enrich their learning.  In the parent learning guide, a web based resource also provides enrichment in the other content areas.

  • Won’t my child fall behind with this schedule?
    • Each child learns at a different pace both in the classroom and in a Distance Learning Environment.  Each school year, every student enters at a different individual level.  At the beginning of the year students will be given screeners for Math, English Language Arts, and Social Emotional Health to find out which students may need additional support to access grade level standards.

  • What is my role as the parent?
    • As the parent, you are your child’s cheerleader and motivator.  You are not their teacher.  Their teacher will need your support in encouraging them to engage in the lessons, for our little guys, supporting them in logging into their lessons and helping them enjoy school in this new normal.  Ask questions of the teachers when questions arise reach out to your teacher when you are finding lessons difficult.

  • What about testing?
    • Teachers will be providing assessments as part of their instruction. We are still waiting to find out if there will be state testing this year.

  • What happens if my child gets sick?
    • If your child is sick, please email your child’s teacher and let them know that your child is ill, just as you would during the school day.  Then, please, take care of your child.  When they feel up to re-engaging in their learning, allow them to do so.

  • What happens if my child’s teacher gets sick?
    • If your child’s teacher gets sick, their principal will work with them to ensure their lessons are still being delivered.

  • As a family, we do not want our child on technology all day
    • We understand the need to limit screen time.  The elementary schedule is designed so that the technology time can be limited.  Teachers may be posing questions to be answered on technology or assigning videos or live chats.  This time should be able to be completed in 20-30 minute chunks of time and can be spread throughout the day.  “Live” lessons will be recorded so they can be viewed at another time if technology was not available at the scheduled time.  A variety of additional extension activities will be able to be completed offline.  Additionally low tech extension menus are being developed and will be added to the District website.
