all right we should be recording and I'm going to share my screen and Awning your time and get our presentation started alrighty once again thank you for coming I am dr. John Garner I am the director teaching and learning for Culver City Unified School District and tonight we are going to review the case through 12 ccusd math Pathways these are the placement process and recommendations and we will mostly cover the accelerated Pathways that we offer at Culver City Unified School District so thank you for coming thank you for being with us we will answer questions at the end but hopefully we can answer your questions throughout the presentation Sauron actors this evening are to understand the pathways available to ccusd students in regards to math understand the placement process and staff and family rules in place in it cuz there is some support do we have to do some early morning in order to get our students to their courses so we begin with there are three established Pathways for K-12 math the state record send it track it ensures you have strong conceptual mathematical understanding the pathway is rigorous and it does meet University of California a through G requirements this pathway would place a student in Algebra 1 in 9th grade and we will go through each pathway very carefully so this is our overview so you'll know what is coming up next we have an accelerated track and that allows our high achievement master to access access AP Calculus in 12th grade so through the accelerated track a student would access AP Calculus in 12th grade we also have a double accelerated path and we'll talk about that night if you have a fourth grade currently have a fourth grade student and the double accelerated pathway allows high-achieving math students to access APK access AP Calculus in 11th grade so we'll show you what that looks like all right so this is the overview of the state recommended track so you see through K through 8 they take for example math 6 math 7 math 8 in 8th grade and then they take algebra night they take geometry in 10 Algebra 2 and 11 and then they can take precalculus or AP Calculus in 12 are honors track does start engine so that's tenth grades are honors math track starts in geometry and then 90% of the SAT and the ACT questions are covered by the end of 11th grade algebra archetype questions just to let you know there are also other courses available such as intro to data statistics AP Statistics AP Computer Science we do have a brand-new and vile mental statistics course so we do have several courses that could meet the requirements for 12th grade or the fourth year of math if the university that your student your child chooses is required for years and we do encourage more years of May so that's the state recommended truck The Accelerated track let me go ahead and show this would mean that in 6th grade they would take accelerated math So currently will recently Miss Wilcox gave a test to all the 5th graders because we do have several points of access to the accelerated pathway and the ones that qualified took the 6th grade accelerated math which means they would have all of their sixth grade curriculum and half of their seventh grade curriculum and then 7th grade they would take half of their seventh grade curriculum and all of their eighth and they would take algebra and eighth grade very important because algebra is needed in 9th grade to graduate so they would take it in eighth grade and that would count for graduation at the high school and then they would take 9th grade geometry with a potential of taking 10th grade algebra 2 with honors 11th grade AP precalculus or precalculus honors and then they would take 12th grade AP calculus so that's what the second accelerated track with look like the 8th grade algebra course is the high school equivalent course but it's taken at the middle school so like I said it does count for credit towards graduation at the high school I'm for the accelerated track for geometry the honors course is the default placement so they would have the ninth grade geometry honors course when they get ready to go to high school that would be there for math class in high school right where the double accelerated pathway this is the pathway that we have for our there currently fourth graders we are going to offer The Accelerated math test for fourth graders the week that we get back from Memorial Day was so that would be the May 27th week is when the schools will be offering this this test some of this some students have been recommended and tonight you may nominate your child to go ahead and take this test to become a part of the double accelerated pathway but don't forget next day there's another accelerated pathway and there's entry points for acceleration so in this case a 5th grader would take during zero. That's first thing in the morning starting at 7:15 their accelerated math 6 which would be all of math 6 and half of math 7 at CCMS so they would take a zero. Class next year at CCMS and then once they get to CCMS the sixth grader they would take the second half of 7th grade and then all of AIDS grade and they would take that with 7th graders but they would be in 6th grade and Miss Wilcox is here. explain bed many greedy of the logistics of how that works but will go over that with your questions at the end so then in 7th grade still it's ecms they wouldn't take the high school equivalent course up Algebra 1 and then they would take an eighth grade geometry honors but that would be at the high school so they would take that zero. At the high school for geometry honors for 9th grade day would be ready for Algebra 2 honors remember honors is the default placement and then they would take in 10th Grade the precalculus honors or the AP precalculus now you notice that 11th and 12th they do take to calculus courses if they would like that would be AP Calculus a b 4/11 and 8 Peak alcula specie for 12 this track is recommended for students who are interested in stem careers engineering science medicine this is the track for students who are interested in stem careers but there are all so if a student is not interested in stem careers they could take courses such as AP stats or AP Computer Science or any courses that are available at the community college of the Bible that we accept to know that colleges regardless of where you start would like you to have usually four years of math they are always looking for 4 years of math and to graduate from the high school you have to have three just let you know all right so then double acceleration placement process some of your students your children were recommended for this I'm in some of your recommending your child for the double accelerated pathway we're looking for grades that are at or above academic standards and math or standardized test scores teacher recommendation for the double accelerated courses were looking for enthusiasm and perseverance and tackling challenging math problems Concepts and independent and self-motivated learner someone who seeks help when needed apply skills to new and non-routine situations and satisfactory work habits and study skills that's for that zero. Class that's the teacher recommendation that's the criteria we ask for the test is mostly 5th grade end-of-the-year standards the assessment so they must demonstrate Proficiency in end of the year 5th grade standards be there pretty regular assessment process there is no waiver for double acceleration for students who do not meet the criteria so that means if they do not pass that test that will not be on the double accelerated pathway go ahead and ask Miss Wilcox to unmute to see if she has any further comments regarding the recommendations or the pathway good evening as it does when you came in late on Kelly Wilcox eye began this program at the middle school about 10 years ago I think I'm doing a zero. Accelerate its sixth course at zero. And therefore allowing 5th graders to come over to the school and to join the class the class starts at 7:15 every morning so 5 days a week it's from 7:15 to 8 so you would need to be able if your child does pass the test I need to be able to provide transportation for your child to come to the class begins at 7:15 ends at 8 and then get back to their Elementary School students who do well in the class are those that are super motivated they have to want to be there at can't be that you want your child to be there at 7:15 they really want it to be there it's not just let's see how fast we can go through the standards we're not asking them calculators we all have one in our pockets so it's the class is really a an application class at thinking class so the students who are who do well in the class or those who can kind of think outside the box and really want to push themselves it's a little bit of a competitive class I have 35 kiddos in there who Who Loved math who liked to talk Matthew liked it to figure out the answer in different ways and that's the time student who does well in the in the course thank you very much I'm sorry I got caught off guard cuz I was answering a couple of questions in the chat thank you Miss Wilcox for your inside all right so this is basically something that the teacher would use to recommend a student to be a part of the double acceleration math placement process just for transparency we do use the screen or a mouth other will be switching to i-Ready next year they're looking for the third grade cast score to exceed standards if it meets standards and you have just an inkling feeling that you're stupid would be successful in the accelerated math pathway that's fine we will take that as well because this is your nomination and recommendation is parents the current trimester math grades threes and fours we do take 30 Wells Forest we understand that sometimes student you know in class may not put forth their best effort but still might have some of agility or ability and products that doesn't quite show up on the report card then my teacher gives helpful comments to let us know how to work with the student so how to determine what is best for your child most students are appropriately placed in the state I'm in the truck that's most students we tend to think that algebra should be taken in 8th grade because you know that is accelerated and lots of us did but however the state recommended track is math 8 in in 8th grade the most students to take that shot some students are appropriately placed in the accelerated track that says I I spoke algebra and 8th grade and few students are appropriately placed in the double accelerated track and that would be Algebra 1 High School equivalent algebra one and 7th grade geometry honors in 8th grade taken at the high school and the algebra 2 in ninth grade algebra 2 honors and 9th grade few students are properly place in the double accelerated track alright so how did the term in what is best for your child if you're wondering if you should sign student app for this academic achievement that the test is based on fifth grade Common Core State Standards Mastery of Concepts up to 4th and 5th grade Denver differentiated learn with the okay three and four provides challenging content with acceleration a depth of knowledge is students who can think abstractly and apply what they've learned two different situations that's it I meant came up with common core so it just means that they don't just go through the motions or no algorithms but they're able to apply that would be a good student for this course academic motivation learning behaviors and then we do have links to an article of long-term implications for high school and Beyond with the accelerated pathway so if you are interested the next steps are to go ahead and scan a QR code and put in the, give me the RL in the chat if you're interested sorry this is going to take a second because I didn't have it queued up and then sign your student. But in the meantime if you have questions please put it in the chat or go ahead and unmute Miss wilcoxson I will stay on the line for your questions as happens to be the last flight of the presentation so I'm prepared to answer questions now I have three questions in the chat I believe the first one is is it possible for students to get placed in the accelerated track and get bumped up to double accelerated later on that's a good question Miss Wilcox can you answer that I can I answered I'm at there is a chance for a child who's in the Excel weighted path we have just a couple students who I'm in the past few years who have who have tried who wanted to do the double acceleration and so we give a test at the end of the year this is difficult to do because they are they really have to self teach themselves about a year-and-a-half of math on their own so if they're in the accelerated 6 class they're covering 6th grade in half a seventh if they want to move to algebra that means they have to show Mastery of all the 8th grade standards and the other half of the 7th grade standards I we don't quite recommended except there's always one or two kind of outliers thank you I have a hand raised a butcher at Wildwood. Org Wildwood it's this is my name's Anna. How you doing the students if they go into the double accelerated what do the 5th graders do when it's math time at school and their regular 5th grade class that's a really good question we have been reviewing that in in different ways so students are still responsible for 5th grade standards so they would be assessed in fifth grade during their fifth grade class on the teacher would be responsible for differentiating for that student Morton apps with 5th grade standards so that would be the standard way to go about it but we also do have a program called I excelled at we could use we would want to meet with you two to understand if that's a good fit with your for your student and that is sort of self-taught in the courses go up to precalculus I believe often but something that could be offered if if necessary if it works for your child it also is has a lot of up to their current fifth grade teacher as well as what they could do during that back that bath time are you going I'm Corran hinderliter is how many classes do you have in the middle for double accelerated program so the the one that that we're talking about tonight is there will be one class is a zero. mixed with half part 5th graders Parts 6th graders in the pass is the largest group of students I've had this year I might have 19 fifth graders and so I have a 16 6th graders to a class of 35 and that's normal at the middle school in the past I've had anywhere from maybe six or eight students who passed the test and so they will just be 10. Class offered thank you I meant my question is will that be rough. Class be graded like their standard grades that they receive in their Elementary and is there any like standardized test that they do for that class I tell her all I know standardized testing right now you know so they'll be graded as if they were a middle school student it will go on their middle school transcript believe it or not so it'll have that grade will be great at a b c d e f I'm work with work habits and citizenship just like you probably went through school when it's standardized test time when we're doing the cast the fifth graders they did not have to come to school last week so they got a a morning off for a week while I tested my 6th graders their testing is there since their fifth they will be 5th graders they will only take the fifth grade cast test all right I'm going to take Helena with a Raystown and then we'll go back to the shop I texted her husband and the 4th grade trick was I right and hearing that the test will be based on 4th and 5th grade based on 5th and to be honest with you forth and fifth are very closely tied together I think the only difference is maybe a little bit of geometry and integers so if this if your student has any background with decimals and fractions 5th grade is not that far off of 4th but yes the test is accelerated testing it does test standards at the end of 5th grade Miss Wilcox I don't want to add yeah that's that's a you can find the fifth grade standards by just looking up Common Core State Standards bring up fifth grade and it will give you a pretty good idea what would be covered and the test is once you come back from the ending the test starts basically from Tuesday on and that's the School site decision I'm pretty sure none of the TLP scheduled it for the Tuesday so we'll probably either Wednesday Thursday or Friday but you'll have to contact your school to find out the exact date of being if if he promises in cuz he has to pass in that's fine if you do then we can talk for the accelerated is that was that my understanding so next year in 5th grade there is another exam and you can nominate them to take that exam as well and there was a boy yes you correctly so if he does not pass the test for double accelerated you still eligible for Accelerated the following year okay thank you for fifth graders after zero. Back at elementary school so they still go through the regular Keelan we did answer that and then how many classes we answered that or students who will recommend accelerated what are the next steps to confirm placement so after they take the exam you'll you'll receive a letter from the ed services department that says they passed the test and that you're accepting the position of 0. We do provide transportation so that's one thing that's a kind of a big deal that we need to mention you will have to drive or come up with a carpool from your school sites to be zero. Class unless of course you're from Farragut because it's next door I'm not sure I you mean I mean you can recommend your stew if they're in fourth grade and they the test is not until the second week or the week after Memorial Day so you absolutely can nominate your child to take the test so please please feel free to do so we answer the question about Transportation students parents will have to figure out how to get their students over to CCMS for transportation there's a question about a virtual option know there is it's it's in person only the question about how much of the exam must be Mastered by test student test day I believe it's an 80% pass rate it is 80% this what I'm question says if I understand well the acceleration program starts in 14 months for current 4th graders that would be the regular the single acceleration program that would be that at the end of 5th grade they would take the test and they you can put them in the accelerated program in 6th grade that one there are waivers allowed for so that you can choose for your child to be in the accelerated program in sixth grade and it that just means that they take a year-and-a-half of math at a time each year so what can you do in the meantime work on the 4th and 5th grade scale question is the assessment computer or written it is computer-based but they do get scratch paper to write on I'm the test is given in one day we don't do makeups unfortunately what grade is 80% go ahead and Miss Whitlock sign the upcoming fourth test for the 4th graders differentiates whether students are placing accelerated versus double accelerated know the upcoming test given up the week of Memorial Day will tell a tell you if your child is eligible for the double accelerated pathway. Okay. Call if I for double accelerated then you would wait till the end of 5th grade did they try and get into the accelerated program how many kids from Lynn how get chosen it's it's totally if we don't base it what school they're from so it's whoever gets 80% or better on the test and parents are willing to transport them there yeah whoever gets 80% or better is invited to the course assessment is for current 4th there's only and yes you have to provide transfer transportation to and from you can't leave him with us the question about what do you mean by rigorous assessment it would be master the standards at the end of fifth grade so you would you would know the standard you would have seen any by 80% the standards that are usually tested at the end of 5th grade that's that's the meaning of rigorous peso current fourth graders will take the test in May and they'll start the double acceleration program if they pass in August time class starts at 7:15 after the in their seats by 7:15 the doors open at 7 and then it ends at 8 which is plenty of time to get the students back to their Elementary School there's a good question about just thinking about ST Math trajectory from 6 p.m. it's about the abbc calculus courses and so those courses are recommended because of the rig and the high level of for students who are going into the stem professions but of course if the student wanted to take those they actually could we do think about like if a college is requiring 4 years of math in your child's not real into calculus but other things you have a a writer or a Humanities type of student who doesn't need all that calculus then you do have to think about which math would you use in order to get those four years of math that's why we and you'll be able to see the presentation letter that's why we gave a little bit of suggestions on if it's not calculus your student wants to take their statistics there's computer science masters other types of math find out. There's other types of math that your student could tie but it is just recommended that the a be in the BC calculus courses are for students going into I'm stem careers since we'll all 4th graders take the assessment note you if you have not been recommended by the your fourth grade teacher then there is a form here to to to nominate your child yourself to take it but it will not be given to all 4th graders there is no practice test available I just put that in one more time in the chat question if the student passes double assessment test is there any pre work during summer prior to Star your fault there's no pre-work necessary but I mean Miss Wilcox do you have any advice Maybe my advice enjoy the summer it's okay we're going to teach them everything they need to know if your child is that accelerated double accelerated test they're already there already let him enjoy the summer and come in and we'll hit the ground running then absolutely it says when you share the list of students from each School so when I taught it in the past the week before school I had the the fourth grade the fifth grade the new fifth grade parents come so they could all meet each other they could meet me and they could figure out who was going to be there and who can carpool excetera so absolutely there is a question about the makeup test somebody wants to know about the makeup test we give this test in one week and the tlt's or the teaching and learning Partners at each site in charge of the assessment calendar for this so go ahead and reach out to the school site I may have spoken incorrectly and they did build in a a make-up day so call your school to find out if your child have has to be sick on the day of the test if there is a makeup and I will reach out to the teaching and learning Partners to let them know that our parents were concerned that there wasn't a makeup day so perhaps they can squeeze one into the calendar but don't count don't count me out there could be I just I don't have the exact schedule for each school I just know that they are going to start testing that week Wilcox this is the only chance that we can do in less the make-up day for the double accelerated they cannot test in in June or in August or in September this is this is it we have a request for Miss Wilcox to skip retirement and tea Cheryl. Forever 1 I'm all for that I guess the answer is no okay I don't know where we where we're at here Mister bucks is just to be clear current 4th graders will test for double accelerate yes the double accelerated track starts at fourth grade single or accelerated track starts our pathway starts in 5th grade I can't remember how many questions are on the test it's either 30 or 40 and it is not multiple choice it is free response they're going to do their work on scratch paper and they're going to type their answer into the the test then I do collect the scratch paper so I do get a chance to you and make sure everything is is fair and then that's the class is held at the middle school in the morning at 7:15 how do you know if your child was nominated they would have already received it in nomination form or do you would have already been informed and I like this question 2 said I don't know if my son needs to be double accelerated this is not for everyone it is not and if you feel like you know what I don't feel like I need to push my kiddo this hard don't do it it's okay definitely a homework looks like in 0. You get on Tuesdays Thursdays and Fridays homework probably takes 10 to 30 minutes 3 days a week alrighty so just to let you know that there's the you can scan that QR code code I put the I put the The Forum in the chat so if you would like to sign your student your child up for the double accelerated this is 4/4 and parents with fourth grade students please go ahead and sign up that accelerated exam will be administered the week we get back from Memorial Day and you do have plenty of time to decide but I think the deadline for turning in your nomination form is the Monday prior to Memorial Day so I think that would be next Monday dr. Garner how how long before notified of the results it's actually last year did take a little bit it'll be before school ends for sure before school ends cuz we've got to get the letters to you before you disperse to your summer and then so we will find you before school end and we are not sure who is going to be teaching that 0. I can guarantee you this we will do the best we can to find a great teacher and the curriculum will not change the curriculum is set Miss bergonzi leaves that curriculum and it is an awesome curriculum is very Hands-On it's very fun it's very challenging it's very engaging so you're in good hands wherever wherever it lands we could question about 0. Does it start the very first day of school or is there a. Where it doesn't start yet nose usually I'm not sure what day school starts next year I wasn't paying attention usually the first day of school is Panther prep which is a middle school kind of a prep day and that 0 / 0 that usually doesn't meet on that first day but the teacher will reach out to you and hopefully also get a an evening where you can come and visit and just kind of get the layout of the land and know where the kids are going to meet so take care of all that I'll make sure that happens the first day of school August 21st 2024 that's a Wednesday and you have to sign up if you killed her, you still have to follow up on the phone correct no there's no have to get to do with you you need to put it on you need to fill in this nomination and I put in the chat so that the Tails near the teaching and Learning Partner will pull your stupid to be tested if they've already been nominated by their teacher. permission slip so there has to be an acknowledgement that I'm nominating and I accept so yes you do have to fill out the form sorry about that and the test has happened during school hours question is how long is the test that believe they are finished in 45 minutes is that is that too long as well Cox or is it 30 minutes the test I believe somebody earlier said it was an hour and a half so okay I'm off I I know what I am doing don't quote me on that I read somebody else's because I don't administer this test I don't know how long it is Ben Co peas administer it I could have sworn it was 45 but I can get back to you on that if you send me an email and if anybody has additional questions after we in this we're going in this in about 2 minutes let me know the TLP is the teaching and learning partner there is one at each School site I believe some of them are online here as well I think they're doing this at this evening so we have Miss Abbott's call El Rincon just go to the front office and they'll let you know who eldacon I miss Hato at La bayona Miss Romero at Farragut it's Miss Jones at Lynn how and then I sense a honeybell Allison Eva at El Marino so it's that back the helper person that you always see running back and forth helping the principal that's the deal. no problem all right so we are going to go ahead and say goodnight to everybody remember this is recording I'm going to go ahead and stop sharing and I guess the test is an hour and a half Sarah Jones just reached out to me thank you sir an hour and a half the test is an hour and a half so the students have time to figure everything out alright thank you very much the record ring is going to be on our website as soon as I can get it there I'm also wait I do have the presentation I can send to you or I'll make it available PDF somehow on our website that shouldn't take too long so if I send a PDF I'll be fine and then as soon as I can get the recording up I'll get the recording up I appreciate you coming this evening with all your great questions I put my email in the chat and if I can answer and I'll tag Miss Wilcox or one of the teaching and learning partners and we'll get you covered I appreciate you it's very much and have a good evening thank you all thank you
